Don’t Let Allergies Ruin Your Spring!

With our beautiful blanket of snow on the ground, it may be hard to imagine that spring starts next Monday, but it does!

Spring is a wonderful time of the year, except for the 50 million Americans who suffer from seasonal allergies. For those people, spring can be downright miserable. However, it doesn't have to be that way. There are a few simple ways to ensure that spring is enjoyable once again this year.

The culprits are allergens. They come into your home through the air. Once inside, they settle on the surfaces of your home, making you and your family miserable with breathing problems, coughing, sneezing, red eyes, itchy throats, and runny noses.

The solution is A/C maintenance. It can drastically reduce the amount of allergens throughout your home and help to make spring a wonderful season for you and your family again. Below are five easy tips that will help:

1. Change your filter out for a high-quality one

A high-quality air filter is your best defense against all allergens. Look for filters with at least a MERV 8 rating to trap more microscopic particles, reducing indoor allergens. Also, filters should be checked monthly and replaced at least every three months. A dirty filter won’t trap debris and could make your system operate less efficiently.

2. Clean debris from around both the outdoor and the indoor units

The outdoor A/C unit pulls air from outside, runs it through you’re A/C system, and then circulates it throughout your home. Check for dust and debris, clearing it away from the unit as often as possible to keep it from being pulled into your home.

Don’t neglect your indoor unit, either. Just like the outdoor unit, if dust and debris are around the indoor unit, they will get sucked into the system and circulate throughout your home. Sweep, vacuum, and dust the area around the indoor unit often to reduce excess allergens in your system.

Also, keep dust away from your registers. If they are dusty, you are blowing allergens throughout your home.

3. Check for mold

Mold is a huge cause of allergies. In addition, left unchecked, it can cause serious illness or even death. It loves humid, moist places. Check your air ducts, condensate drip pan, drain, evaporator coils, and the air handler every few weeks for signs of mold. If you find small amounts of mold, you can remove them yourself. If you have a major mold issue, however, call a professional.

4. Call Solaire Home Comfort for a thorough A/C maintenance appointment

Spring — or allergy season, as a lot of people call it — is the best time to have you’re A/C system gone over thoroughly. Doing so not only keeps your system running at top efficiency, it reduces indoor allergens, allowing you and your family to really enjoy the beautiful springtime.
